About LNRF
Dr. Litvan's Role as Director of the UofL Division of Movement Disorders In addition to her duties as CEO of the Litvan Neurological Research Foundation, Dr. Litvan is also the DIrector of the University of Louisville's Division of Movement Disorders. The University of Louisville (UofL) Division of Movement Disorders was developed in 2003 and has since grown to include well-trained multidisciplinary faculty and staff who serve all the clinical and research needs of movement disorder patients and family members. Our comprehensive approach for the care of movement disorder patients and families includes state-of-the art diagnosis, appropriate evaluations, pharmacological and rehabilitation therapies, education, and ongoing support to improve the quality of life of patients and families. Of notable mention are our members with distinctive qualification, including Drs. Ferrara and Houghton, who are neurologists who have completed fellowships in movement disorders and specialize in dystonia and other deep brain stimulation. Our allied team members include devoted speech and language pathologists (one voice expert in PD, and one speech and swallowing expert in PD), occupational, physical and rehabilitation therapists, psychiatrist, psychologist, case manager, and geneticist. Our research focuses on identifying the causes of various parkinsonian disorders, as well as improving diagnosis and therapies for these disorders, tremors and dystonia. In addition, several other clinical researchers are working on projects involving gait, balance and emotion. Through an IRB approved quantitative measures protocol, all members of the multidisciplinary team are able to submit specialty evaluations into our comprehensive database for both clinical and research purposes. The Division of Movement Disorders also has a strong basic science component with investigators researching genetics, neurotoxicology, inflammation, and sleep disorders in parkinsonian animal models. The UofL Division of Movement Disorders has a strong commitment to teaching medical and Ph.D. students, residents, fellows and visiting health professionals throughout the state. Our program has been a leader in launching Moving Ahead, an educational and outreach program for patients, caregivers and healthcare providers. During the 2009/2010 fiscal year, the Division of Movment Disorders recieved funds from the Litvan Neurological Research Foundation to start an outreach and education program for corticobasal degeneration. This project continues as part of the division's outreach program. The Division of Movement Disorders Research Facilites are located at the Frazier Rehab Institute, in the heart of downtown Louisville's Medical Campus, within a 3-minute walking distance to many of our affiliated facilities. The Movment Disorders Clinic is located in the University of Louisville Heatch Care Outpatient Center (HCOC). *Neither the University of Louisville nor the UofL Division of Movement Disorders are in any way affiliated with the Litvan Neurological Research Foundation, nor is there any financial relationship between the two. The information above is for informational purposes only, all staff of the Division of Movement Disorders are employees of the University of Louisville.*
