Division of Movement Disorders The Litvan Neurological Research Foundation (LNRF) serves as a philanthropic partner of the Division of Movement Disorders. The University of Louisville (UofL) Division of Movement Disorders was developed in 2003 and has since grown to include well-trained multidisciplinary faculty and staff who serve all the clinical and research needs of movement disorder patients and family members. Our comprehensive approach for the care of movement disorder patients and families includes state-of-the art diagnosis, appropriate evaluations, pharmacological and rehabilitation therapies, education, and ongoing support to improve the quality of life of patients and families. The director of the Division of Movement Disorders, Dr. Irene Litvan, was recently elected to serve on the International Executive Committee of the Movement Disorder Society, and is member of several of committees of this society. Of notable mention are our members with distinctive qualification, including Drs. Ferrara and Houghton, who are neurologists who have completed fellowships in movement disorders and specialize in dystonia and other deep brain stimulation. Our allied team members include devoted speech and language pathologists (one voice expert in PD, and one speech and swallowing expert in PD), occupational, physical and rehabilitation therapists, psychiatrist, psychologist, case manager, and geneticist. Our research focuses on identifying the causes of various parkinsonian disorders, as well as improving diagnosis and therapies for these disorders, tremors and dystonia. In addition, several other clinical researchers are working on projects involving gait, balance and emotion. Through an IRB approved quantitative measures protocol, all members of the multidisciplinary team are able to submit specialty evaluations into our comprehensive database for both clinical and research purposes. The Division of Movement Disorders also has a strong basic science component with investigators researching genetics, neurotoxicology, inflammation, and sleep disorders in parkinsonian animal models. The UofL Division of Movement Disorders has a strong commitment to teaching medical and Ph.D. students, residents, fellows and visiting health professionals throughout the state. Our program has been a leader in launching Moving Ahead, an educational and outreach program for patients, caregivers and healthcare providers. The Division of Movement Disorders Program is affiliated with a variety of local medical facilities and hospitals University Neurologists PSC, Jewish Hospital, The Frazier Rehabilitation Institute, the University of Louisville Hospital, and will soon be working closely with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Division of Movement Disorders is located at the Frazier Rehab Institute, in the heart of downtown Louisville's Medical Campus, within a 3-minute walking distance to many of our affiliated facilities.
